Why am I releasing music like this?

In the summer of 2025, I started putting out live versions of songs from an album I’d written in the most ‘low stakes’ way I could think of - performed live with a guitar, synth and drum machine. The aim being to see what would happen if I let the songs exist in the real world early, and see how they connected with people outside of a lengthy and closed recording process.

Some people did actually really like some of the songs, and the clearest feedback (aside from everyone saying it sounded like the 90s) seemed to be that people wanted hear them played by a real band. So rather than jumping straight to a finished studio album, I decided to run the experiment again - this time recording the same tracks in a live band setup (guitar, bass and drums).

These first two versions of the album, v0.1 (solo live) and v0.2 (‘band’ live) are intentional formats, not demos. They’re performance-led versions of the same record, released on social platforms and Bandcamp. They aren’t placeholders for the final album, but different ways of approaching the same songs.

When I first started playing in a band years ago, any recording that we did was always about creating the ‘final’ version. You rehearsed, refined, recorded, mixed, mastered, built anticipation… and then released something intended to be definitive. The results sounded great, but for an independent band the process could be slow, and sometimes more focused on perfection than creating momentum or excitement.

This project deliberately challenges that approach.

Would people still be interested in hearing a studio version of a song after having first heard a live version?

Would anyone care or notice if an album uploaded to streaming services changed slightly - for the better, after it’s been initially released?

Is it possible to scale a musical project up (or down) sustainably and in a way that's based on realistic interest and demand?

An Eternity of Not was always written as an album. By releasing live versions of every track first, those songs get to prove themselves in different forms before arriving at v1 (the studio version). That studio album doesn’t have to be limited by a specific live setup, and when ready, it’s the version that will be released more widely on streaming services, as well as Bandcamp.

Any income from the live releases, and eventually the studio release can be reinvested into improving production, expanding the visual side of the project, and collaborating with others (both in the studio and live) to push everything further.

This experiment might end up proving why people usually work on these things behind closed doors, but you can follow along and help shape what happens next via social platforms, or by signing up to the mailing list.
